About the Preserve
The Weiss-Loveday Watershed is a combination of four Clinton Land Trust properties that surround a 12.8 acre parcel of Cockaponsett State Forest called The Dudley Lot. Together these properties create a 65.79 acre preserve with almost three miles of trails.
Traveling north on River Road from Interstate 95, the main trailhead and parking lot is located on the right side of the road just past the Riverdale Farm Campsites. There is another trailhead off Spencer Hill Road. Parking for that trailhead is on the side of the road.
There is one trail that covers the Weiss-Loveday Watershed, and that is a red blaze trail. From the River Road trailhead, the initial terrain is steep but soon levels off. This is the Weiss section of the watershed. The trail leads through a section of forest with large old oak trees and newer wood lot growth along gentle terrain.
Upon entering the Cockaponsett the trail blazes are yellow tape that are easy to follow. These trails lead into older growth forest with large poplar, birch, oak and hickory along a gentle terrain and connect again with the Loveday section to the south and the Weiss section to the west.
There is a loop trail on the Loveday section that has a spur trail leading to the Spencer Hill Road trailhead. Another spur trail emerges onto Watrous Avenue and up Westwood Road back onto the Weiss section of the Watershed. That trail leads back to the River Road trailhead and the parking lot.
